RAJKOT: The eight-year-old girl, whose body was found near Bhaktinagar railway yard on Saturday, was allegedly gang-raped by three married men, who killed her fearing she would expose their crime.
On Monday, police arrested the three accused identified as Mithilesh Kumar alias Kanio Das (24), a native of Bihar; Bharat Meena (38) of Udaipur, Rajasthan and Amresh alias Brijesh Kuldeep (25), a native of Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh.
The accused knew the girl’s father as they lived in the same neighbourhood and worked in the same factory as labourers.
The girl had gone missing on Friday evening and her father had registered a complaint at Malviya Nagar police station the same night.
“The postmortem confirmed the sexual assault. Fearing that she would tell everything to her father, the three smashed her head with a stone and killed her,” said Vidhi Choudhary, additional commissioner of police.
The police arrested Das from Viramgam, Meena from Rajasthan and Amresh from Rajkot city.
When the girl was playing near her house, Mithilesh lured her to an isolated place where two other accused were already present. She started screaming for help but they gagged her and then took turns to rape her. Thereafter, they killed the girl by smashing her head with a stone.
During the investigation, police scanned the CCTVs of the area, and one of the footage showed the girl walking on a road and a man walking beside her. However, his face was not clear, and establishing his identity was difficult. After talking to a few people in the area, the police got to know that his name was Mithilesh.
The police team tracked down Mithilesh using technical surveillance.
“He admitted to having committed the crime. His arrest led to the arrest of the other two,” said Choudhary.
