2 killed, 1 missing after torrential rains trigger landslide in Switzerland

Two people have died, and another is missing after torrential rains led to a landslide in southeastern Switzerland, news agency AFP reported quoting local police.
The Alpine nation faced severe storms over the weekend, prompting the evacuation of hundreds in the west after the Rhone River and its tributaries overflowed.
“The bodies of two people were found by rescuers in connection with the landslide in the Fontana region,” the police said in a statement.
Emergency services are determining the best method to evacuate 300 people attending a football tournament in Peccia, while nearly 70 individuals are being evacuated from a holiday camp in Mogno.
Earlier, police had noted that poor weather was hindering rescue efforts, with many valleys cut off and without electricity, according to the report.
The federal alert system also reported that parts of the canton were without drinking water.
In the western canton of Valais, civil security services announced the evacuation of “several hundred” people and road closures after the Rhone River overflowed at various points.
The previous weekend, southeastern Switzerland also experienced extreme rainfall, resulting in one death and significant damage.
