Controversial ex-US President Donald Trump recently said he wouldn’t lose voters if he shot someone – and when Americans were polled about this a staggering number said this wouldn’t change their vote.
Recent research from Canadian firm Mainstreet found that a whopping 38 per cent of people surveyed said Trump shooting a person on fifth avenue would not impact how they voted.
Mainstreet surveyed 1053 adults aged 18 and above living in the US, conducting the survey between Friday 15 March and Sunday 17 March. In one question, it asked: “Donald Trump has said he could shoot someone on 5th avenue in New York city, and people would still vote for him.
“Would Trump actually shooting someone on 5th avenue impact your vote for him or against him? (all voters).” Over one third of Americans who responded, 38 per cent, said this would not impact their vote, while the remaining 62 per cent said it would.

In January 2016, Trump boasted that support for his presidential campaign would not decline even if he shot someone in a crowded street. He said: “I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose voters.”
Delving into the data further, more men than women said Trump shooting someone wouldn’t impact their vote, while the age group with the highest percentage that said their vote wouldn’t change is 18-34-year-olds.
In terms of income those earning in the $75,000 to $100,000 bracket were most likely to say it wouldn’t impact their vote. And when it comes to party ID, those in the Republican Party (or GOP) were by far the most likely to be impacted by Trump shooting someone at 46.8 per cent of respondents. Democrats were least likely to be impacted at 31.1 per cent.

It comes as critics of the controversial ex-president are questioning the mobility of his right leg after a video went viral online of him allegedly “dragging” it as he walked, seeming to struggle.
The presumed 2024 GOP presidential nominee has decided to run for president again following his 2020 defeat but critics have been quick to speculate about his physical condition and health at 77 years old. Social media users have zeroed in on the mobility of his right leg, even though Trump has never reported anything to be wrong with the limb.
Trump’s team published a report in November that he claims was from his physician, which stated his cognitive health was “exceptional” and that he had “reduced his weight through an improved diet and continued daily physical activity.”
