Bolivian police arrest general accused of coup attempt: Report



Bolivian police on Wednesday night arrested the general accused of orchestrating a military coup in an attempt to overthrow President Luis Arce, according to state media reports.
The recently dismissed army commander, Juan Jose Zuniga, was seen being escorted into a police vehicle while he spoke to journalists outside a military barracks, according to the footage.
This came after the Bolivian president took to X to express concerns regarding an attempted coup by the military.
“We denounce irregular mobilizations of some units of the Bolivian Army. Democracy must be respected”, he said.

Under the leadership of General Juan Jose Zuniga, military units assembled in Plaza Murillo, the central square housing the presidential palace and Congress. According to a Reuters, an armored vehicle forcefully breached a door of the presidential palace, followed by soldiers entering swiftly.
“The Bolivian people are summoned today. We need the Bolivian people to organize and mobilize against the coup d’état in favor of democracy,” he said.
Later, Bolivian military forces, accompanied by armored vehicles, retreated from the presidential palace in La Paz.
